Frequently Asked Questions:

When and where do the league events take place?

The WNCHS league includes players from all over Western North Carolina including Buncombe, Henderson, and McDowell counties.  The sanctioned league events generally take place in Buncombe or Henderson counties.

The sanctioned high school events take place in the spring of each year (March-May).

Currently, all league events are on Wednesdays from 4:15 - 6:30 (approx)

The current league's schedule can be found in our EVENT SCHEDULE section.

How much does it cost to participate?

NOTHING!

The WNCHSDG league is FREE TO PLAY (yes, even the PDGA sanctioned events)! If you need discs/equipment, we'll even give you some!

Does a player need to be in a (public/private/charter) school to play?

NO!

All high school aged students are allowed and encouraged to play!

While there are team scoring elements to the events, players are primarily competing as individuals and can do so regardless of where they go to school or if any other players from their school participates.

Public school, private school, charter school, homeschool, early college-- it's all good! The only requirement is that you are in 9th-12th (or equivalent) grade!

Does a player need to bring a parent and/or coach with them?

No!

While parents and coaches are welcome and strongly encouraged to come check out the action (or caddie for you, if you'll let them), you do not need to bring an adult to participate.

There are adults associated with the schools and league at every event to make sure everything runs smoothly and safely.  All of the adults present are parents, coaches, teachers, or vetted volunteers.  With very few exceptions, the events take place on courses that are CLOSED to the public at the time of the event to ensure safety for all participants.

Can an elementary or middle school student play in these events?

No.

Our events are limited to high school aged students only. This allows us to grow the sport with a specific population and afford our players the opportunity to meet, compete with, and become friends with other students their same age.

There is a middle school league that runs in the fall that we encourage middle-school aged players to participate in.

There has traditionally also been a youth league offered by Black Mountain Recreation and Parks, though due to course damage from Hurricane Helene, that program is temporarily suspended.

Does a player need to participate in all of the league events?

No!

You can participate in as few or as many events as you can/would like. We encourage you to play in as many as you can!

The end of season individual rankings are based on your top four (of six) regular season results, but you are still welcome to come out even if you can't/won't make it to four (or more).

More information about the scoring/format can be found in our FORMATS section.

Can you help (start/grow/maintain) a school club?

Yes!

We'd love to help in any way we can! If you're a student at a local school looking to get more folks involved, or a teacher who would love to see a club at your school, we can help!

Maybe we can get you gear or hook you up with a local volunteer to help out, or just give you some advice.

Please reach out to us at WNCHSDG@Gmail.com with any questions or requests!

Do we play in inclement weather?

Sometimes.

League events will continue in the event of light-to-moderate rain.

In cases of severe rain, extreme cold,  or any lightning in the area, events may be delayed, rescheduled, or canceled.

All weather updates will be published on the front page of the website, as well as in a banner across the top of all pages in the website. Additionally: players, parents, coaches, volunteers etc. can provide contact information here to receive scheduling updates as needed.
