Season and Events Formats
Regular Season Events Format:
During the spring season there will be approximately six regular season events (see the current season schedule here)
Each regular season event will take place on a Wednesday from 4:15 to approximately 6:30.
Each regular season event will consist of a single round of 18 holes of individual stroke play. Players will be playing "singles" (not doubles or teams) and will keep track of and score every stroke (throw) on each hole.
Where applicable and available, the varsity boy's division will play a longer layout, and girl's varsity / boys junior varsity will play a shorter or modified layout. More information about layouts (when available) will be posted on our COURSES page.
Each regular season event in the spring 2024 season (and likely beyond) will be part of a PDGA sanctioned league. Here is how that impacts the regular season events compared to seasons past:
Real-time digital scoring: No more paper scorecards, and no more having to wait around to add up scores! Plus hole notes included in the scoring app.
[Note: events may still use paper scoring as needed based on cell reception (i.e. Avery's Creek)]Round ratings: Each round will be PDGA rated, which is a great metric for tracking a player's progress during the WNCHSDG season and beyond!
A stricter adherence to the rules: Because the rounds are sanctioned, players will need to adhere to the rules more strictly than in the past. This shouldn't be a big change, but it's worth mentioning. Players should familiarize themselves with the PDGA rules. More explanation to come as needed at individual events.
The standings and event results will be published on the league website as well as DiscGolfScene and the PDGA Live pages (for individual round ratings and hole-by-hole scoring). The links for all of those can be found for the current (or more recently completed season) on our RESULTS AND STANDINGS page.
At the end of each event we will recognize the top three players (including ties) from each participating division. Team (school) results will likely not be available until the next day on our results and standings page as they do not automatically calculate and will require manual scoring. For more on scoring, see the Season Format section below.
[*Note: the player standings shown on the PDGA page are NOT accurate/official league standings! Check the website or DGS for accurate individual standings!]
Regular Season Format:
Regular season individual and team points standings will be calculated and displayed after each regular season event on our RESULTS AND STANDINGS and DiscGolfScene pages.
INDIVUDUAL STANDINGS
Players receive points for each player (in their own division) that they score better than or equal to during a sanctioned round of competition.
A player's season total is the sum of points from their top four regular season events.
Because players only score four rounds, it allows flexibility in case players need to miss a week (or two) OR if players want to move between divisions (for players that are eligible for more than one division) after an event or two.
Individual points leaders at the end of the season (in each division) will be recognized and awarded as league MVPs.
TEAM STANDINGS
Players will (by default) also compete as members of school-based teams.
Teams will score each event by combining the points (at that event) of their top two [GVAR, BJV] or three [BVAR] scoring players.
A team's season total will include the results of all six regular season events.
Team points leaders at the end of the season (in each division) will be recognized and awarded.
The varsity winners of each event will be featured on the filmed lead card(s) at the Regional Championship.
If more than four unique players are regular season event winners in either division, the top four players (from the winners) based on end-of-season points totals will play on the lead card(s)
If fewer than four unique players are regular season event winners in either division, the player(s) (who are not event winners) with the highest end-of-season points totals will join the lead card (until there are four).
The tournament director and/or WNCHSDG administrators reserve the right to substitute for absent players for the purposes of school or grade based diversity.
NOTE: Players that earned lead card privledges will never be removed from the lead card! Substitutions are only in the unlikely case that a qualifying player can not attend the regional championship.
Regional Championship Format:
The Regional Championship (RC) is the end of season, winner-take-all event.
Modeled after NCHAA sports' regional competitions, the winner of the RC is the Regional Champion. Regular season results will not factor in except for seeding and cards.
The long-term goal is to use the RC as a state championship qualifying event. Progress toward this goal is being facilitated by North Carolina High School Disc Golf.
[These notes are from the 2024 season, but will likely be similar for 2025 ]
The RC will take place on Wednesday May 15th (weather required a reschedule to 5/22) at Jackson Park in Hendersonville, NC.
The RC will consist of one 18 hole round for all divisions, with layout specifics outlined in the COURSES section.
There will be a doubles/practice round the week before the RC at Jackson Park (May 8th) , where players can choose to compete in a standalone WNCHSDG (best shot) doubles event for prizes (and GLORY!) and/or choose to play a practice round with other members of the league prior to the RC the following week. (Canceled due to lightning and flooding)
Players do NOT need to have participated in any regular season event or the practice round to participate in the RC (but are obviously strongly encouraged to!)
This season the RC will be a PDGA sanctioned XC-Tier. Players do not need to be PDGA members to play and the tournament will be free for all players. PDGA non-member fees are waived for youth divisions and the WNCHSDG league will cover tournament sanctioning costs.
The lead cards of both Varsity divisions will be filmed and post-produced footage will be released (in some capacity) during the off-season. (note: full coverage of the Girl's Varsity division was not available due to the shift of the event date)
For purposes of league scoring, teams will be scored in the same fashion as the regular season, and the team from each division with the highest points will be declared the champion for the season.
